Could This French Shortstop Be the MLB’s First Female Player?

When Melissa Mayeux first took the field, she wasn’t looking to make baseball history. She was just following her older brother.

Now the 16-year-old shortstop from France is generating major league buzz in baseball circles as a prospect who could become the first female MLB player ever.

Mayeux plays on France’s under-18 junior national baseball team and last month became the first female ever to be placed on Major League Baseball’s international registration list, making her eligible to sign a contract with any of the 30 big league teams in the sport called “America’s pastime.”

“I’ve received a lot of messages from many girls who play baseball across the world and who told me that I had become their new idol,” Mayeux told Reuters in a recent interview.

Prospects typically are placed on the international list at Major League Baseball-sanctioned events after verifying their dates of birth and citizenship. While anyone can be placed on the list, only those who have the potential to be signed are generally registered.

The French Scrabble Champ Does Not Speak French

They call him the Bearded Wonder. Okay, no one actually calls him that (that we know of), but they should. He’s the greatest living Scrabble player in the world, and he’s at the height of his powers. Tennis has Serena Williams. Golf has Jordan Spieth. Soccer has Lionel Messi.

Scrabble has Nigel Richards, and he’s arguably more dominant at his game than any of these other athletes are at theirs.

On Monday, July 20, Richards—a native of New Zealand—won the French-language world Scrabble championship. He does not speak a word of French. It’s Nigel Richards’s world, and we’re all just Scrabbling in it.

“He doesn’t speak French at all, he just learnt the words,” Liz Fagerlund, a friend of Richards’s, told The New Zealand Herald. “He won’t know what they mean, wouldn’t be able to carry out a conversation in French I wouldn’t think.” Richards reportedly memorized an entire French dictionary in the two months leading up to the competition.

Coke , Ford . and Xerox have asked Planned Parenthood to remove their names as corporate donors

Who would want to be associated with these guys after finding out the sell dead babies? Not these guys!

Representatives from Coca-Cola, Ford Motor Co. and Xerox say they’ve asked Planned Parenthood to remove their names as corporate donors to the embattled organization.

The move follows a Daily Signal report revealing the names of 41 companies that Planned Parenthood listed as donors. That list, which was featured on Planned Parenthood’s website, has since been removed.

This latest development comes in the wake of two undercover videos that showed Planned Parenthood executives talking about the sale of fetal body parts. Planned Parenthood is facing both federal and state investigations—and the possibility of losing taxpayer funding.

Earlier this week, The Daily Signal used information from 2nd Vote to publish the names of 41 companies listed by Planned Parenthood as contributors. Shortly after the story was published, representatives from Coca-Cola, Ford Motor Co. and Xerox contacted The Daily Signal to say they were erroneously listed and requested that Planned Parenthood take them off its website.

YouTube Is Now More Popular Than Cable

YouTube Popularity

During Google’s recent earnings conference call, Google chief business officer Omid Kordestani said that YouTube is now bigger than any individual US cable network when it comes to attracting 18-49 year olds, advertising’s most sought after demographic.

Despite YouTube’s apparent inability to generate much of a profit, the popular video sharing site has seen user engagement metrics skyrocket in recent months. Speaking to this, Kordestani relayed that viewers are spending more time watching YouTube videos than ever before. Year over year, the amount of time users, on average, spend watching videos is up an impressive 60%. Underscoring this tremendous growth, Kordestani added that this is the fastest growth rate in viewing time YouTube has seen in over two years.

As one would expect, the increase in viewing hours is mostly attributable to mobile devices. In the last year alone, the average time mobile users spent watching YouTube clips more than doubled. More to the point, the average time users spend watching YouTube videos on mobile devices now checks in at 40 minutes.

The takeaway from this is that YouTube has successfully transformed itself from a site where users go to watch one-off videos into a site where users stick around for nearly an hour. Of course, this is no happy accident. Over the past few years, Google has rolled out a number of varying site enhancements in an effort to increase the site’s ‘stickiness’. From suggested videos to auto-playing of new videos following the conclusion of another, Google’s experimentations are clearly paying dividends.

Tomb, a Successor To TrueCrypt For Linux Geeks

Tomb, the Crypto Undertaker 2.1

Tomb is a system to make strong encryption easy for everyday use. A tomb is like a locked folder that can be safely transported and hidden in a filesystem. Its keys can be kept separate; for example, you can keep the tomb on your computer and its key on a USB stick. Tomb is written in code that is easy to review and links shared components: it consists of a ZShell script and desktop integration apps; it uses standard GNU tools and the crypto API of the Linux kernel (dm-crypt) via cryptsetup.

Seattle Sees Unexpected Fallout from $15 Per Hour Min. Wage

Low wage workers in Seattle who spent months agitating for a city-wide $15-per-hour minimum wage were quite successful in their quest. But many have suddenly found that the new rate has had unexpected consequences.

Some workers across the city are left telling bosses to give them fewer hours at the higher wage because a full week’s earnings now puts them past the threshold for some welfare payments such as food stamps and assistance with rent.

Of course, one of the things that supporters of the higher wage said was that they wanted to help lift min. wage workers out of poverty and welfare.

Only last week, for instance, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti claimed that a $15 min. wage in his city would lift 600,000 out of poverty. Self-avowed socialist

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT)

16% Senator and a candidate for the Democrat nomination in 2016, also recently claimed that a $15 min. wage would “lift millions” of Americans out of poverty, off welfare, and into the buying public.

But now some workers in Seattle are finding that the higher wage is forcing them off the welfare programs they would rather stay enrolled in and, instead of celebrating their higher income, they are imposing fewer work hours on themselves in order to stay on assistance.

Seattle’s KIRO-TV recently spoke to a nursing nonprofit that admitted that some workers are trying to cut hours and earn less to avoid losing assistance. In another case, a local radio station has been talking about the story.

“If they cut down their hours to stay on those subsidies because the $15 per hour minimum wage didn’t actually help get them out of poverty, all you’ve done is put a burden on the business and given false hope to a lot of people,” said KIRO-FM’s Jason Rantz said this week.

There have been other unforeseen consequences to the higher wage. Some restaurants are tacking on a 15 percent surcharge onto customer’s bills in order to avoid firing workers.

Other stores, restaurants, and small businesses are simply closing down because they can’t afford the wage hike. By March of this year, for instance, restaurant closings increased at a much higher than average rate in Seattle.

Many restaurants noted that the new wage put labor costs at nearly 50 percent of operating costs, and that made profit margins disappear.

American Teens Having Less Sex According To Study

(Thinkstock)

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — American teens are having less sex, especially boys.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention surveyed roughly 2,000 boys and girls, 15 to 19 and found the percentage of teens who reported they had sex at least once has dropped significantly since the 80s. The decline for male teens was greater than female teens.

In 2013, 44% of teenage girls surveyed said they had experienced sex, compared to 51% in 1988.

For teenage boys, the drop was more dramatic. In 1988, 60% reported they’d had sex compared to only 47% in 2013.

Changing sexual mores could explain the overall decline, but one expert believes it is because teens are better educated about sex. Dr. Brooke Bokor, an Adolescent Medicine Specialist at the Children’s National Health System says their smartphones may provide a private, comfortable space to access information.

“They’re looking on the web,” Bokor told the Washington Post. “They’re looking for guidance from parents, guardians and physicians. They can and will make positive decisions for their own health, both sexual and otherwise.”

The study also looked at contraceptive use and childbearing among teens in the United States.
