U.S. FDA Approves First-Ever Implant To Treat Opioid Addiction

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved the first-ever implant to fight addiction to opioids, a class of drugs that includes prescription painkillers and heroin.

Reuters reported that the matchstick-sized implant, developed by Titan Pharmaceuticals Inc and privately owned Braeburn Pharmaceuticals, is by design less susceptible to abuse or the illicit resale that plagues existing oral therapies.

Fewer than half of the estimated 2.2 million Americans who need treatment for opioid abuse are receiving help, according to the U.S. Centers for Human and Health Services (HHS).

Currently, two drugs are predominantly used to treat opioid addiction — methadone, which is dispensed only in government-endorsed clinics, and the less-addictive buprenorphine, which exists as a pill or strip of film. While effective, a pill or film may be lost, forgotten or stolen.

Evidence suggests that the use of these medicines as part of the overall treatment program are more effective than short-term detoxification programs aimed at abstinence, the FDA said on Thursday.

The implant, Probuphine, administers buprenorphine for up to six months after users have been stabilized on the oral form of the drug, and is used along with behavioral therapy and recovery support.

“I intend to make this the most successful implant that’s ever been marketed … and I think it’s absolutely possible given the unmet need,” Braeburn Chief Executive Behshad Sheldon said in an interview ahead of the FDA decision.

However, some doctors are concerned that the implant may incentivise patients to rely solely on medication, and ignore the lifestyle changes they need to make.

App For Heroin Users Alerts Your Friends You May Have Overdosed

Unresponsive after using? There’s an app for that — (Stock photo-Alamy)

“Just say no” doesn’t always work for serious heroin addicts, but that doesn’t make using the drug any less dangerous. So, in an effort to reduce the potential for fatal overdoses, an app developer has turned to Reddit for ideas to create a harm-reducing app from those with firsthand experience.

Redditor HeroinKing on Sunday posted to the /r/opiates subreddit a call for suggestions from fellow heroin addicts on how to improve on the app, which alerts a friend or family member when a person overdoses. It currently exists in beta form in the Google Play store. The app’s developer, Chris Oelerich, is not a heroin user. “I can’t understand addiction like that,” he told Vocativ. “I don’t think you can until you’ve been there.” So he turned to his friend HeroinKing—who he describes as a “brilliant guy,” but someone whose life is controlled by heroin—and his online network of fellow addicts for suggestions on how to make the app as useful and functional as possible.

“It’s like this open community and they talk about opiates like they’re collecting pokemon cards,” Oelerich said of his decision to take to Reddit for suggestions. “It’s a very open thing for them. [Heroin addiction is] bizarre to me, but it’s a huge problem…I want to treat it like a problem to be solved.”

Running Linux and Chrome OS Together Using Crouton

Running a GNU/Linux distro within Chrome OS greatly increases the capabilities of a Chromebook.

Leo Laporte is a longtime technology commentator and also the host of the show “The Screen Savers,” on the TWiT Netcast Network. In this video he explains how to install Linux on a Chromebook using Crouton, an open source tool developed by Google employee David Schneider.

I give Leo extra credit points for saying, “I decided to just install the command-line desktop.” I like the way he says that so nonchalantly.

Now that Android apps are coming to Chromebooks, if you also install a full Linux desktop, there’s almost nothing you cannot do on a Chromebook. As Chromebook’s SSD storage increases, you’ll end up with a laptop with as much capability as a Macbook Air, at one-third the price.

Governments Turn to Commercial Spyware to Intimidate Dissidents

SAN FRANCISCO — In the last five years, Ahmed Mansoor, a human rights activist in the United Arab Emirates, has been jailed and fired from his job, along with having his passport confiscated, his car stolen, his email hacked, his location tracked and his bank account robbed of $140,000. He has also been beaten, twice, in the same week.

Mr. Mansoor’s experience has become a cautionary tale for dissidents, journalists and human rights activists. It used to be that only a handful of countries had access to sophisticated hacking and spying tools. But these days, nearly all kinds of countries, be they small, oil-rich nations like the Emirates, or poor but populous countries like Ethiopia, are buying commercial spyware or hiring and training programmers to develop their own hacking and surveillance tools.

The barriers to join the global surveillance apparatus have never been lower. Dozens of companies, ranging from NSO Group and Cellebrite in Israel to Finfisher in Germany and Hacking Team in Italy, sell digital spy tools to governments.

A number of companies in the United States are training foreign law enforcement and intelligence officials to code their own surveillance tools. In many cases these tools are able to circumvent security measures like encryption. Some countries are using them to watch dissidents. Others are using them to aggressively silence and punish their critics, inside and outside their borders.

Dutch Firm Trains Eagles to Take Down High-Tech Prey: Drones

KATWIJK, the Netherlands — Its wings beating against a gathering breeze, the eagle moves gracefully through a cloudy sky, then swoops, talons outstretched, on its prey below.

The target, however, is not another bird but a small drone, and when the eagle connects, there is a metallic clunk. With the device in its grasp, the bird of prey returns to the ground.

At a disused military airfield in the Netherlands, hunting birds like the eagle are being trained to harness their instincts to help combat the security threats stemming from the proliferation of drones.

The birds of prey learn to intercept small, off-the-shelf drones — unmanned aerial vehicles — of the type that can pose risks to aircraft, drop contraband into jails, conduct surveillance or fly dangerously over public events.

The thought of terrorists using drones haunts security officials in Europe and elsewhere, and among those who watched the demonstration at Valkenburg Naval Air Base this month was Mark Wiebes, a detective chief superintendent in the Dutch police.

Mr. Wiebes described the tests as “very promising,” and said that, subject to a final assessment, birds of prey were likely to be deployed soon in the Netherlands, along with other measures to counter drones. The Metropolitan Police Service in London is also considering using trained birds to fight drones.

A Google Search Stopped Oklahoma From Illegally Executing A Prisoner

Add this to the list of things Google can do: save the life of a condemned man, at least briefly.

The state of Oklahoma was hours away from executing Richard Glossip when officials realized they had the wrong drug for the lethal injection cocktail. Rather than issue a stay of execution to get the correct drug, Gov. Mary Fallin’s legal counsel said the drugs were interchangeable. “Google it,” he told a deputy attorney general. Google, in its infinite wisdom, disagreed. The execution was stayed.

That incident came to light while the jury was investigating the use of the wrong drug in the execution of Charles Warner and the near-execution of Richard Glossip, according to a recently released grand jury report.

According to the Associated Press, in October 2015, potassium acetate was about to be used to execute Glossip, instead of potassium chloride. The former is not part of the state’s execution drug protocol; the latter is. When Steve Mullins was asked if Glossip’s execution should be stayed, Mullins, who is an attorney and not a chemist, said he thought the drugs were interchangeable but that the attorney general’s office could “Google it” to make sure. Someone did, and it wasn’t. Glossip is still awaiting his execution.
