Police are Creating 3D Printed Finger Dummy Of A Murder Victim’s Finger

3d-printed-fingerShort Bytes: An MSU professor Anil Jain has been approached by the law enforcement officers for the creation of 3D-printed fingerprint moulds of the victim of a murder case. The finger dummies will be used to unlock the smartphone of the victim for any traces of the murderer.

Law enforcement officers are taking a big leap into the future. From using robots for dropping bombs on suspects to making a 3D print of murder victims’ fingers. A Michigan State University professor Anil Jain was contacted by the police officers to create a 3D printed finger dummy of the victim of a murder case. The 3D fake finger will be created using prescanned images of the victim’s fingerprints and will be used to unlock victim’s phone.

Originally reported by Rose Eveleth for Fusion, the details of the case were not disclosed by Jain as the investigation is currently in progress. However, Jain’s PhD student Sunpreet Arora has told Eveleth that he has created the finger moulds of all the fingers. “We don’t know which finger the suspect used,” Arora said. “We think it’s going to be the thumb or index finger—that’s what most people use—but we have all ten.”

Most Americans think too many people are easily offended

At a time when the appropriateness of language has become a political issue, most Americans (59%) say “too many people are easily offended these days over the language that others use.” Fewer (39%) think “people need to be more careful about the language they use to avoid offending people with different backgrounds.”

A new national survey by Pew Research Center finds substantial partisan, racial and gender differences on this question.

About eight-in-ten (78%) Republicans say too many people are easily offended, while just 21% say people should be more careful to avoid offending others. Among Democrats, 61% think people should be more careful not to offend others, compared with 37% who say people these days are too easily offended.

The partisan gap is reflected in starkly divergent views among Trump and Clinton supporters. By a ratio of about five-to-one (83% to 16%), more Trump supporters say too many people are easily offended. Among Clinton supporters, 59% think people need to exercise caution in speaking to avoid offending others, while 39% think too many are easily offended.

The survey was conducted June 7 to July 5 among 4,602 adults on Pew Research Center’s nationally representative American Trends Panel. Full methodology and topline are available here.

Florida man changes his name to ‘Kraftwerk’

The competition for the world’s biggest Kraftwerk fan just went up a notch—maybe three notches. A man in Florida posted a Flickr set depicting his own everyday life as a robotic humanoid wearing the red and black uniform that the German quartet donned for the band’s iconic 1978 album The Man-Machine.

The gentleman in the pictures appears to have changed his name to “Kraftwerk” (although the picture of his driver’s license with his new name looks suspiciously ‘Shopped to me). In the pictures he is depicted going record shopping (clutching an LP of his beloved Man-Machine, of course), as well as consuming a chicken salad croissant and a cold brew coffee and even sleeping in his bed (yes, wearing the ridiculous red shirt and black tie under the duvet).

Amazingly, he neither depicts himself using a pocket calculator, nor riding a bicycle. There are also zero traffic cones in the pictures. However, there is an automotive theme to the gallery—he is shown in the driver’s seat of his “truck” and also putting “petrol” (not gas?) in his tank as well as paying for it with a “debit card.” Surely all of that qualifies as some kind of reference to Autobahn?

Apple ID and Facebook led to KickassTorrents being shut down

Sometimes, you don’t want to know how the sausage is made — but sometimes you do. When KickassTorrents went down, the assumption was that it was an elaborate sting operation. Nope; it was email and iTunes purchases.

The US government’s complaint, which Gizmodo dove into with some zeal, details how thoroughly foolish KickassTorrent’s leader, Artem Vaulin, was. Not only was he operating a KickasssTorrents Facebook page, but was doing so with a personal email address.

How personal? It was a ‘@me.com’ address, which is owned by Apple (and is the precursor to @icloud.com).

His email was discovered when authorities sent Facebook a warrant for information having to do with the site’s page. From there, the US Government turned to Apple.

Vaulin used the same @me.com email to make an iTunes purchase, which records your IP address for every transaction. His IP addresses were then tied to his bitcoin account.

Alcohol is a direct cause of seven forms of cancer, finds study

Analysis implicates alcohol in development of breast, liver and other types of cancer and says even moderate consumption is a risk

Alcohol causes seven forms of cancer, and people consuming even low to moderate amounts are at risk, according to new analysis.

Health experts endorsed the findings and said they showed that ministers should initiate more education campaigns in order to tackle widespread public ignorance about how closely alcohol and cancer are connected. The study sparked renewed calls for regular drinkers to be encouraged to take alcohol-free days, and for alcohol packaging to carry warning labels.

Fresh analysis of evidence accumulated over recent years implicates alcohol in the development of breast, colon, liver and other types of cancer.

The study, published in the scientific journal Addiction, concludes that there is more than simply a link or statistical association between alcohol and cancer that could be explained by something else. There is now enough credible evidence to say conclusively that drinking is a direct cause of the disease, according to Jennie Connor, of the preventive and social medicine department at Otago University in New Zealand.

“There is strong evidence that alcohol causes cancer at seven sites in the body and probably others,” Connor said. “Even without complete knowledge of biological mechanisms [of how alcohol causes cancer], the epidemiological evidence can support the judgment that alcohol causes cancer of the oropharynx, larynx, oesophagus, liver, colon, rectum and breast.”

Transgender High school Students Forced To Wear Arm Bands

THE KENOSHA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT is currently forcing Ash Whitaker and other transgender students to wear badges of shame the same as the Nazis did in an effort to humiliate and endanger LGBT lives.

Related: Leaked NC bill would mandate statewide Transgender bathroom ID’s one for non op, a different version for post SRS gender non conforming people..

The Daily Beasts reports that a federal Title IX lawsuit filed in Wisconsin on Tuesday alleges that the Kenosha Unified School District instructed guidance counselors to have Ash Whitaker, a 16-year old transgender boy, and “any other transgender students at the school” wear “bright green wristbands” so that the school could “more easily monitor and enforce [their] restroom usage.”

The Transgender Law Center has filed a lawsuit on behalf of Ash Whitaker and his mother which reads in part:

(Whitaker had been using the boys room uneventfully for seven months when he was denied) access to boys’ restrooms at school and requiring him to use girls’ restrooms or a single occupancy
restroom; (b) directing school staff to monitor his restroom usage and to report to
administrators if he was observed using a boys’ restroom; (c) intentionally and repeatedly using
his birth name and female pronouns, and failing to appropriately inform substitute teachers and
other staff members of his preferred name and pronouns, resulting in those staff referring to him
by his birth name or with female pronouns in front of other students; (d) instructing guidance
counselors to issue bright green wristbands to A.W. and any other transgender students at the
school, to more easily monitor and enforce these students’ restroom usage; (e) requiring him to
room with girls on an orchestra trip to Europe and requiring, as a condition of his ability to
participate in a recent overnight school-sponsored orchestra camp held on a college campus, that
he stay either in a multi-room suite with girls, or alone in a multi-room suite with no other
students, while all other boys shared multi-room suites with other boys; and (f) initially denying
him the ability to run for junior prom king, despite being nominated for that recognition based on
his active involvement in community service, instructing him that he could only run for prom
queen, and only relenting and allowing him to run for prom king after a protest by many of those
same classmates/

THE KENOSHA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT denied all of the complainants allegations…

The Williams Institute’s June 2016 survey reports that the transgender population doubled since 2011, the last time the number was estimated. The 2011 survey, pegged our numbers at just .03% of the population or roughly 700,000 people. That number has often been referenced by hate groups working against transgender progress with the meme to ‘protect all’ against being discomforted by an almost non-existent voiceless inconsequential minority. Add that idea to the inevitable albeit imaginary herds of perverts who would come out as trans to peep in bathrooms and presto, a vile minority to exclude, even kill, justified by a Christian Bible (which if they read embraced transsexuality three times)!

Transgender population doubled

That meme just worked in Texarkana Arkansas where voters turned out 4-1 to overturn the city council’s trans-inclusive ordinance during the same week that SecDef Ash Carter announced the end of the military trans ban.

The method that the William Institute used to get these new figures came from extracting data from a national CDC survey. There are no national  polls asking about transgender/cisgender status so the newest estimate is that, just an estimate.

It’s possible that there’s a whole lot more of us than the latest educated guess would suggest.

Jody Herman, a public policy scholar at the Williams Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles, told VOA Thursday that the results are from people self-reporting on U.S. government surveys. She said while the study did not examine the factors behind the rise in self-identification, growing social acceptance of transgender people might have influenced the rise in numbers.

“That’s one possible explanation,” she said, “that it’s becoming more mainstream.” She says that as social acceptance of transgender identity grows, it is likely that people would be more willing to identify as such on a survey.”

That and being transgender used to be the last thing anyone could ever wish to be, a curse, a cruel joke by a vindictive god, loss of cis privilege, and possible death sentence. But then there’s the Mike Huckabee clone who commented on the VOA article….

Are your sperm up to scratch? Phone microscope lets you check

How are the little swimmers doing? Low sperm counts or poor sperm quality are to blame in around a third of cases of couples who can’t conceive. A visit to a clinic for a test can be awkward, but a new smartphone-based system lets men determine whether that’s necessary by checking their fertility in the comfort of their own home.

Men often find it embarrassing to provide a semen sample at a clinic, says Yoshitomo Kobori of the Dokkyo Medical University Koshigaya Hospital in Japan. So Kobori devised an alternative. “Everyone has a smartphone now, and they have good cameras,” he says. “I thought a smartphone microscope could be an easy way to look at problems with male fertility.”

Kobori and his colleagues at the University of Illinois in Chicago came up with a microscope containing a lens less than a millimetre thick, slotted into a plastic “jacket”. Clipped on to the camera of a smartphone, it magnifies an image by 555 times – perfect for looking at sperm cells.

EU eyes Israeli technologies for spotting militants online

European powers are trying to develop better means for pre-emptively spotting “lone-wolf” militants from their online activities and are looking to Israeli-developed technologies, a senior EU security official said on Tuesday.

Last week’s truck rampage in France and Monday’s axe attack aboard a train in Germany have raised European concern about self-radicalized assailants who have little or no communications with militant groups that could be intercepted by spy agencies.

“How do you capture some signs of someone who has no contact with any organization, is just inspired and started expressing some kind of allegiance? I don’t know. It’s a challenge,” EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Gilles de Kerchove told Reuters on the sidelines of a intelligence conference in Tel Aviv.

Internet companies asked to monitor their own platforms’ content for material that might flag militants had begged off, De Kerchove said.

He said they had argued that the information was too massive to sift through and contextualize, unlike pedophile pornography, for which there were automatic detectors.

“So maybe a human’s intervention is needed. So you cannot just let the machine do it,” De Kerchove said. But he said he hoped “we will soon find ways to be much more automated” in sifting through social networks.

Onde Magnetique Will Wow And Flutter Your Ears — Hackaday

[Scott Campbell] built a cassette-based synthesizer that sounds exactly like everything you’ve heard before. The sound generation comes straight off cassettes, but the brainbox of this synth varies the volume and pitch. It’s called the Onde Magnetique, and it is what you would get if you combined a Mellotron and Ondes Martenot. The key component…

Hacker is offering for sale a complete US Voters archive

Colleagues at HackRead discovered a seller using the pseudonym of ‘DataDirect’ offering US voters’ registration records on a black marketplace.

On the Dark Web is quite easy to find any kind of data, recent data breaches have literally flooded the principal black markets.

Recently, colleagues at HackRead discovered a seller using the pseudonym of ‘DataDirect’ offering US voters’ registration records on the dark net marketplace “The Real Deal.” The seller offers  US voters ’ records where for each state at 0.5 BTC (around USD 340). The seller claims to have access to US voters ’ records from all the US states.

“US voter registration records. Selling the DB on a State-by-State basis. 0.5 BTC per state (you must tell me which State you want. Some people think it’s unfair to make each State cost the same amount because some States are much bigger than others. I think it’s just easier this way.” states the item description.

At the time, I was writing there is no news about the authenticity of the records, but DataDirect is a seller already known to the experts because it is the same that leaked online the Thomson Reuters World-Check terrorist database.

The availability online of records belonging to US voters is not a novelty, in December 2015 the security expert Chris Vickery discovered 191 million records belonging to US voters online. The precious data were stored in an unprotected server exposed online.

The database containing US voters ’ data was discovered on December 20th, Vickery provided all the details about his disconcerting discovery to DataBreaches.net. The archive includes over 191 Million Americans’ personal identifying information (PII).
