Startup designs cast that heals bones, lets you scratch

Three Illinois college students have designed the casts of the future. Their design, called Cast21, resembles a pretzel-like sleeve to support bones while healing.

One of the worst part about breaking an arm has got to be the cast. Sure there’s pain and worrying and what not, but as far as sheer unpleasantness goes, the fiberglass cast takes the cake. You can’t shower with it, stuff gets caught under it and can’t scratch, it’s sweaty —  it’s a nightmare. So Jason Troutner, together with biomedical design engineer Ashley Moy, and electrical engineer Justin Brooks from the University of Illinois decided to bring the cast to the 21st century after partnering up at an engineering design class.

“Materials used in fiberglass casts aren’t waterproof; they absorb and trap water. Those are the two main problems we set out to solve,” said COO Jason Troutner.

“Fiberglass casts are poorly engineered and not patient friendly. For an engineer, it seems like such a lazy and impractical solution,” he adds.

[Fix] “Secure Connection Failed” Problem in Mozilla Firefox Web Browser

Today when I was trying to open a few HTTPS websites such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc in Mozilla Firefox web browser, I was getting “Secure Connection Failed” error message. None of the HTTPS websites were opening for me. I tried to clear cache and cookies in the browser. I also tried to create a new user profile in Firefox but all in vain. I even tried to completely uninstall and then reinstall Firefox web browser but it didn’t help in fixing the annoying issue. I was still receiving “Secure Connection Failed” error message on all HTTPS websites.

After a few minutes of research, finally I was able to fix the problem. The culprit behind this problem was ESET NOD32 antivirus program. If you are also using ESET NOD32 antivirus or security suite and facing “Secure Connection Failed” problem in Mozilla Firefox web browser, this tutorial can help you in solving the issue.

Sometimes ESET security products can’t import root certificates properly after installation or upgrading to a new version. When it happens, HTTPS websites with SSL certificates become not accessible and start throwing “Secure Connection Failed” error message in Mozilla Firefox web browser.

To fix this issue, we just need to reset SSL scanning feature in ESET products which can be done with the help of following simple steps:

Surrealist Salvador Dali cookbook released after 40 years

At the age of 7, surrealist genius Salvador Dali wanted to become a chef. Life had other plans for him and instead he dedicated his life to art, but never forgot his passion for cooking. In fact, throwing outrageously lavish feasts with his wife Gala was one of his favorite past times – they often included outlandish costumes and wild animals walking around the table. In 1973, the artist published Les Diners de Gala (the dinners of Gala), a one-of-a-kind cookbook which included recipes like “Thousand Year Old Eggs”, “Veal Cutlets Stuffed With Snails”, “Frog Pasties”, and “Toffee with Pine Cones”.

But despite the unusual names, drawings, and ingredients, this is a genuine cookbook, with several of his recipes still being present in top restaurants in Paris. It’s a hedonistic testament, an ode to the senses of taste and smell. The book warns “calorie-counter” to not buy this book.

“We would like to state clearly that, beginning with the very first recipes, Les Diners de Gala, with its precepts and its illustrations, is uniquely devoted to the pleasures of Taste. Don’t look for dietetic formulas here.”

Pair force victim to TWERK during 90-minute robbery and hostage ordeal

Ana Khan and Tanieka Higgins

Ana Khan and Tanieka Higgins

Two Midland women robbed a man at knifepoint, held him hostage and then ordered him to TWERK to gangster rap.

Ana Khan, 28, and Tanieka Higgins, 25, attacked Christopher Pugh, who was wearing a Pokemon onesie, before keeping him hostage at their home.

During his 90-minute ordeal, a court heard, the pair forced the terrified 26-year-old to dance and twerk while another person filmed him.

Mr Pugh finally raised the alarm and called the police when he managed to escape by climbing out of a window.

Jailing Khan and Higgins for three years each at Nottingham Crown Court, Judge Jeremy Lea said: “He was, in effect, falsely imprisoned and this was really cruel, bullying behaviour.

“He was humiliated, he was made a figure of fun for your own amusement and then you filmed him.

Killer clown craze hits the tattoo parlour as body art fans flock to get creepy inkings

CLOWNS have barely been out of the news in recent weeks, with seemingly ever-more horrifying incidents involving people dressed as them each day.

In Sweden, a teenager was stabbed by a violent jester in the middle of the street, and Childline has reported a massive surge in calls from kids who’ve been left frightened by the phenomenon.

Not everyone is so scared though, as this new tattoo craze shows.

People have been paying homage to the killer clown trend with spooky inkings etched on their skin.

The trend seems to be for tattoos of creepy clowns, with black-and-white and just a hint of colour the most popular.

Man’s fiancée to murderer: ‘Why did you have to kill him over Deez Nuts?’

saleina McClain.jpgSaleina McClain, who was A’Nickalus Hill’s fiancee, in the hallway after speaking in court.

Syracuse, NY — An emotional woman today said she couldn’t believe stupid slang — Deez Nuts — led to the death of her fiancé.

Jashua Williams, 32, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for murdering A’Nickalus Hill over the slang term “Deez Nuts.” Judge Anthony Aloi found him guilty in a bench trial after Williams gave up his right to a jury.

Williams decided to shoot his new roommate because Hill complained about Williams using the term Deez Nuts in front of a child, prosecutors said.

Around that time, Deez Nuts was a popular slang term on social media and spawned a fake presidential candidate who made headlines for cracking a poll in North Carolina.

In court today, Hill’s fiancée, Saleina McClain, described her son’s panicked call after hill was killed in July 2015 at 320 Maple St.

The couple’s young son heard his father begging for his life: “No, my kids are here!” before being shot, Judge Anthony Aloi noted today.

Despite lacking ears, spiders can hear you talk across the room

jumping spider

Everybody thought the tiny arachnids lack sensitive hearing past a couple body lengths away but it turns out spider can even hear you from across the room. Sorry, arachnophobes, spiders just got a lot scarier.

Spider senses

Humans, like most vertebrates, hear by converting the vibrations carried by acoustic pressure waves into sound via our eardrums. But spiders don’t have ears and instead rely on tiny hairs that litter their legs to transmit sound vibrations. The assumption used to be, however, that they can only sense noises extending a couple body lengths away or a few centimeters. Moreover, no one actually thought that these vibrations actually get converted into neural signals we all know as hearing.

Turns out we’ve underestimated spider senses, according to Gil Menda and Paul Shamble from Cornell University. The two were working on a new method that enabled them to read neural signals inside a spider’s minuscule brain. Because of the way their experiment was set up, a popping sound was made by a computer whenever spider neurons fired which corresponded to a stimulus. But when one of them moved a chair, a sound popped. When they clapped their hands from across the room, they were met by a pop again. Their minds immediately filled with possibilities and a new experiment was born.

Jumping spiders were placed in a special acoustic arena designed to absorb most sound reflections or echoes. Menda and Shamble then played all sorts of frequencies. One of them was the familiar frequencies made by a wasp when it flaps its wings, which the spiders responded to by freezing — a typical fear response. The other frequencies were also met by a response and high-speed cameras demonstrated that these were picked up by sensory hairs that shook back and forth.

Even from 16 feet (5 meters) away the spiders could still respond to the frequencies.

NASA To Allow Private Companies To Hook Up Modules To ISS

issPrivate space companies may soon get the opportunity to add their own habitat modules to the outside of the International Space Station. That’s according to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, who announced the new initiative today as a way to help expand the number of companies and people that can do work and research in space. That can eventually help companies gain the experience and capability to create private space stations of their own.

“A vibrant user community will be key to ensuring the economic viability of future space stations,” wrote Bolden in a White House blog post.

“A vibrant user community”

The announcement of this new opportunity comes just a few months after NASA asked private companies for ideas of how they might use one of the docking ports on the ISS. Based on the responses NASA received, Bolden said companies had a “strong desire” to attach commercial modules to the station that could benefit both NASA and the private sector. Bolden didn’t specify which companies expressed interest, but one company in particular, Bigelow Aerospace, has been very vocal about its desire to hook up habitats to the ISS; the company wants to attach its next big inflatable habitat, the B330, to the ISS as early as 2020. One of Bigelow’s experimental habitats is already connected to the ISS, though its stay is only temporary and meant to gather data about Bigelow’s habitat technology.

How to Repair a Corrupted USB Drive in Linux

Everyone has a flash drive. They’re great little things, and they make safeguarding data easy. However, sometimes flash drives can get corrupted or just flat out quit working. If you’re a Linux user and this has happened to you, there’s an easy fix to all of this. In this article we’ll go over a few really simple tricks on how you can get your flash drive back in working order.

Note: the tricks outlined in this article aren’t necessarily exclusive to USB drives and can be used on hard drives too.

An easy way to repair a flash drive, or any drive really, is to use the fsck tool. This tool is great for removing bad file blocks, as most (if not all) corruption and unreadability comes from problems like this. To remove the corrupted file blocks from the USB flash drive, open a terminal window and enter the following commands.

Users must figure out what the drive designation is on the system before things can move forward. Do this by entering the lsblk command. This will list all of the attached disks on your system.

Poland ‘taught France how to use fork’ says deputy minister amid helicopter row

Image caption Was fork use in Europe pioneered by the Poles?

Poland “taught the French how to use a fork”, a Polish deputy minister has said, amid a continuing row over a cancelled defence contract.

Deputy Defence Minister Bartosz Kownacki also accused the French of lacking “class” after losing the multi-billion dollar contract to build 50 Airbus Caracal helicopters for Poland.

A Law and Justice party spokeswoman said the remarks were “unfortunate”.

Poland is to buy US Black Hawks instead. Airbus has threatened to sue.

Speaking on TV, Mr Kownacki accused France of responding by withdrawing the offer of free accommodation and a car for the Polish delegation at a defence fair in Paris next week.

“They are a people who learned to eat with a fork from us a few centuries ago. So maybe this is why they are behaving in this way now,” he said.

MPs from the opposition Civic Platform party called for him to be fired.

Rutgers police searching for ‘Dick Butt’ vandal

Photo by Dimitri Rodriguez |Dick butt memes have been popping up around Rutgers campuses, either spray-painted or drawn in chalk. RUPD is searching for the graffiti artist drawing them.

The Rutgers University Police Department is looking for a vandal who has been spray painting penises on several buildings and sidewalks across the Livingston and Cook/Douglass campus.

Depictions of a popular meme known as “Dick Butt” began appearing on Douglass campus near Hickman Hall, on Livingston campus near Tillet Hall, the Livingston Student Center and the Livingston Plaza bus stop and on Cook campus near the Newell Apartments.

Dick Butt is a drawing of an “anthropomorphic phallus with a pair of testicles and a penis protruding from its backside,” according to the site Know Your Meme. The “Pepe the Frog” meme has also been drawn alongside the phallic graffiti in some places.

University spokesperson Greg Trevor said Rutgers police are searching for the vandal. University Facilities and Capital Planning have been notified to remove the graffiti.

Some students have responded to the graffiti with dismay.

Shivani Patel, a School of Arts and Sciences first-year student, said when she first saw the drawings about three weeks ago, she was reminded of the immaturity of some college students.

“The Most Important WikiLeak” – How Wall Street Built The Obama Cabinet

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars

Perhaps the most startling discovery of the WikiLeaks dumps so far didn’t come from the most recent emails surrounding the various Hillary scandals, though there are many great ones, but from 2008 when John Podesta served as co-chair of President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team.  The email came from Michael Froman, a former Citibank executive, who single-handedly built the entire cabinet of what was supposed to be the “main street” President.

The email in question was even sent from Froman’s Citibank email address (rookie!) and includes “A list of African American, Latino and Asian American candidates, broken down by Cabinet/Deputy and Under/Assistant/Deputy Assistant level, plus a list of Native American, Arab/Muslim American and Disabled American candidates.

Apparently Obama wasn’t as worried about placing women in senior-level positions but Froman decided to offer up some suggestions anyway.

“While you did not ask for this, I prepared and attached a similar document on women.”

Froman even went ahead and “scoped out” which people should be appointed to which cabinet positions.

“At the risk of being presumptuous, I also scoped out how the Cabinet-level appointments might be put together, probability-weighting the likelihood of appointing a diverse candidate for each position (given one view of the short list) and coming up with a straw man distribution.”

As New Republic points out, the Froman appointments ended up being almost entirely right.

The cabinet list ended up being almost entirely on the money. It correctly identified Eric Holder for the Justice Department, Janet Napolitano for Homeland Security, Robert Gates for Defense,Rahm Emanuel for chief of staff, Peter Orszag for the Office of Management and Budget, Arne Duncan for Education, Eric Shinseki for Veterans Affairs, Kathleen Sebelius for Health and Human Services, Melody Barnes for the Domestic Policy Council, and more. For the Treasury, three possibilities were on the list: Robert Rubin, Larry Summers, and Timothy Geithner.
This was October 6. The election was November 4. And yet Froman, an executive at Citigroup, which would ultimately become the recipient of the largest bailout from the federal government during the financial crisis, had mapped out virtually the entire Obama cabinet, a month before votes were counted. And according to the Froman/Podesta emails, lists were floating around even before that.

Many already suspected that Froman, a longtime Obama consigliere, did the key economic policy hiring while part of the transition team. We didn’t know he had so much influence that he could lock in key staff that early, without fanfare, while everyone was busy trying to get Obama elected. The WikiLeaks emails show even earlier planning; by September the transition was getting pre-clearance to assist nominees with financial disclosure forms.

Dutch Who Feel ‘Life Is Complete’ May Get Right to Die

Doctors are seen at a hospital in Brussels.   (AP Photo/Yves Logghe, File)

(Newser) – Already, the Netherlands allows assisted suicide for those who are terminally ill or living with “unbearable suffering.” Soon, people who feel they have nothing more to do in life might get the same freedom. In a letter to Parliament on Wednesday, the country’s health and justice ministers wrote that elderly people—an exact age wasn’t given—with “a well-considered opinion that their life is complete, must, under strict and careful criteria, be allowed to finish that life in a manner dignified for them,” reports Reuters. They hope to draft a law by the end of next year, though a commission found the extension to the euthanasia policy to be excessive.

A group for elderly people likewise calls it “unnecessary and undesirable,” reports the AP. Almost 4% of Dutch deaths in 2015 came under the euthanasia law, expanded since 2012 to include those suffering from certain mental illnesses and dementia. Still, “the Cabinet is of the opinion that a request for help (in dying) from people who suffer unbearably and have no hope without an underlying medical reason can be a legitimate request,” the ministers say. The proposed law will lay out the need for checks, reviews, and supervision and will be vetted by a “death assistance provider,” the health minister adds. (A child was just euthanized in Belgium.)
