A “300-calorie,” gut-busting burrito earns Chipotle a new lawsuit

Their suit stems from one sign in particular, seen independently by the plaintiffs in Chipotle restaurants around Los Angeles. The advertisement shows a picture of a brimming burrito and says: “CHORIZO BURRITO: Try our new deliciously seasoned, perfectly grilled spicy chicken and pork sausage in a burrito with white rice, black beans, fresh tomato salsa, and sprinkle of cheese.” The bottom of the sign reads “300 Calories.”The trio claim they understood the sign to mean that the whole burrito was 300 calories, given the picture and the detailed description. However, according to Chipotle’s own nutrition information, a single serving of the chorizo alone is 300 calories. When it’s wrapped into a burrito with all the fixings listed on the sign, the total calorie count comes out to 1,055—more than half of a standard 2,000 calorie per day diet.

Adopt a Piece of Space Junk, Get Its Tweets as It Flies By

(Newser) – The jury may be out on intelligent extraterrestrial life, but this we know: We are not alone. At least, we are surrounded by our own junk. In an effort to raise awareness about the dangers of the hundreds of millions of pieces of debris currently orbiting planet Earth, an interactive art project backed by London’s Royal Astronomical Society called Adrift is allowing us lowly earthlings to adopt a little piece of space junk and let it tweet at us ominously every time it passes overhead, reports Motherboard. Choose from one of three tagged objects: the Vanguard I, the first solar-powered satellite launched by the US in 1958 and the oldest object still in orbit; the SuitSat, a Russian spacesuit full of trash that was ejected from the International Space Station in 2006; and a piece of Fengyun-1C, a Chinese weather satellite intentionally destroyed by China via a missile in 2007.

India’s grand plan to create world’s longest river set to go

By TV PadmaEngineering projects don’t come any bigger than this. If India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, gets his way, work could soon begin on a project to link large rivers in the Himalayas and Deccan Peninsula via 30 mega-canals and 3000 dams. When the work is finished the water network will be twice the length of the Nile, the world longest river, and it will be able to divert water from flood-prone areas to those vulnerable to drought. But geologists and ecologists in India question the science behind the Inter Linking of Rivers (ILR) scheme. If it goes ahead it might lead to ecological disasters and coastal erosion that would threaten livelihoods and endanger wildlife. And yet New Scientist has learned from the officials close to the project that work on the pilot link is likely to “start any time soon”, with final clearance from the ministry of environment and forests expected imminently.Water networkVersions of the ILR scheme date back more than 60 years to the days of British rule in India. In its latest incarnation the plan is to link 14 rivers in north India and 16 in the western, central and southern parts of the country, creating a water network some 12,500 kilometres long. The idea is to reduce droughts and floods and create 35 million hectares of arable land in the process, as well as the means to generate 34,000 megawatts of hydropower. This project is backed by Narendra Modi, who became the country’s prime minister in 2014. Since then India’s National Water Development Agency has completed detailed project reports for three key initial river links – the pilot link between Ken and Betwa rivers in northern and central India; Daman Ganga and Pinjal rivers in western India; and Par and Tapti rivers in western and central India. A feasibility report of a fourth link between three Himalayan rivers – Manas, Teesta and Ganges – is in the final stages of preparation.

Denmark Urged to Clean up U.S. Military Waste in Greenland

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Greenland is calling on Denmark to clean up an abandoned under-ice missile project and other U.S. military installations left to rust in the pristine landscape after the Cold War.The 1951 deal under which NATO member Denmark allowed the U.S. to build 33 bases and radar stations in the former Danish province doesn’t specify who’s responsible for any cleanup.Tired of waiting, Greenland’s local leaders are now urging Denmark to remove the junk that the Americans left behind, including Camp Century, a never-completed launch site for nuclear missiles under the surface of the massive ice cap.”Unless Denmark has entered other agreements with the United States about Camp Century, the responsibility for investigation and cleanup lies with Denmark alone,” said Vittus Qujaukitsoq, Greenland’s minister in charge of foreign affairs.

The Breitbart Pizzagate Connection: Was Andrew Breitbart Killed To Conceal This Story?

As evidence continues to mount, the now worldwide PizzaGate investigation–being actively ignored by mainstream media–reveals a very interesting and altogether damning connection. Due to the ongoing citizen investigation, on both the conspiracy sub-reddit as well as the new Voat pizzagate subverse, that has risen up to fill the void left by the absence of legal action that some would consider an absolute dereliction of duty, an obvious link between the death of Andrew Breitbart and the Pizzagate investigation has been uncovered.breitbartThere were many who spoke out about the death of Andrew Breitbart, naming it foul play. Not hours after his death was confirmed in early March, skeptics were quick to question what role his passing may have had in relation to a public address he delivered earlier in 2012. Speaking to the audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C. only weeks earlier, Breitbart claimed he had videos that would end the political career of US President Barack Obama.Yet it wasn’t until his coroner, the one responsible for declaring his cause of death(also at the center of much controversy), turned up dead from arsenic poisoning within hours of the release of Breitbart’s preliminary autopsy report that the theory truly began to materialize. Many of Breitbart’s tweets leading up to his death were very accusatory and seemingly irrational at the time. However, following WikiLeaks’ release of the hacked emails from John Podesta, uncovering the horror that is pizzagate, his tweet’s context began to form.

Why Cops Are Raiding Arcades Over a Fishing Game – Waypoint

A squad of 23 police officers serve a search warrant at a house in Little Saigon, twenty minutes from Disneyland. Inside, suspects run from the commotion, trying to tear an air conditioner out and escape through a window. A dozen huddle in the living room in a pile, trying to hide their faces. All seventeen people are detained, and three arrested.Police discover a makeshift pawnshop in the garage. They find evidence that the owners sold guns there, and doled out pot and cocaine to keep their clientele hooked. But the real moneymaker sits in a back room painted with neon fish. It’s the arcade game Dragon Hunter, a machine that’s part of the increasingly popular—and controversial—”Fish Hunter” genre. Less than a month later, Westminster SWAT raids a similar gambling den twenty minutes away, this one with ties to organized crime. Again they find weapons, drugs, and what gamblers refer to as “the fish game.”

When It Comes to Fake News, the U.S. Government Is the Biggest Culprit | Global Research

“We Americans are the ultimate innocents. We are forever desperate to believe that this time the government is telling us the truth.”—Former New York Times reporter Sydney SchanbergLet’s talk about fake news stories, shall we?

There’s the garden variety fake news that is not really “news” so much as it is titillating, tabloid-worthy material peddled by anyone with a Twitter account, a Facebook page and an active imagination. These stories run the gamut from the ridiculous and the obviously click-baity to the satirical and politically manipulative.Anyone with an ounce of sense and access to the Internet should be able to ferret out the truth and lies in these stories with some basic research. That these stories flourish is largely owing to the general gullibility, laziness and media illiteracy of the general public, which through its learned compliance rarely questions, challenges or confronts.

Then there’s the more devious kind of news stories circulated by one of the biggest propagators of fake news: the U.S. government.  In the midst of the media’s sudden headline-blaring apoplexy over fake news, you won’t hear much about the government’s role in producing, planting and peddling propaganda-driven fake news—often with the help of the corporate news media—because that’s not how the game works.

We Need a ‘PC’ That Includes White People

We wonder what the election of Donald Trump means for America. I suggest one thing it means is that educated Americans need to do a reset on what we mean by “politically correct.” We need a new PC.The simple fact is that a core constituency of white people just aren’t going to “get it” the way the left wants them to. This is the case, for example, on race. The left wants white America to see itself as profoundly culpable, as the bad guy in the drama.  Moreover, it is considered key to intellectual and moral engagement to be in eternal battle against the stain of racism in the American fabric. That is understandable in itself. But naturally it can be hard to be white under this analysis. (Note: anyone who thinks this editorial is a defense of racism will likely feel differently if they read to the end.) One likely tires of being endlessly assailed as complicit in sin.

Federal agencies push ‘midnight’ rule-making flurry under Obama

With less than two months before US President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, federal agencies under President Obama are pushing for a final flurry of new rules – despite the high likelihood that many will not survive.By Steven Porter, Staff November 27, 2016 Pablo Martinez Monsivais/AP/File View Caption About video ads View CaptionPresident Obama is heading into his administration’s final weeks with a full agenda of new draft orders to consider, even though his successor has vowed to scale back job-killing regulation and cancel “all illegal and overreaching executive orders.”Despite the likelihood that US President-elect Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress would kill any controversial late-in-the-game moves by Mr. Obama, federal agencies under the Democratic president are pushing for a flurry of so-called “midnight” regulations on everything from the environment to transportation and financial marketplaces. The White House was reviewing as many as 98 final regulations , as of Nov. 15, that could be implemented before Mr. Trump takes office, including 17 with an estimated annual economic impact of $100 million or more, Politico reported. But lawmakers have warned agency heads to avoid rushing to finalize rules or regulations before Obama leaves office.

Iran Loses Nuclear Device, Sparks GCC Worry

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is concerned over a missing radioactive device from Iran’s Bushehr nuclear reactor, Saudi-owned Arab newspaper Asharq al-Awsat reported on Thursday.Aside from the security concerns, at the forefront in the GCC’s mind is what impact the radioactive device—wherever it may be today—could have on water supplies.According to the newspaper, the device went missing after the car transporting it was stolen. Thankfully, the vehicle was recovered, but the radioactive nuclear device was not so lucky. The GCC has contacted the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over the incident—both organizations are concerned that Iran’s nuclear program may pollute the waters in the Gulf, Asharq al-Awsat quoted GCC Emergency Management Center chairman, Adnan al-Tamimi, as saying.

Encrypted email service Riseup sparks worry after warrant canary appears to expire

Warrant canaries are useful but flawed when not implemented properly.

Questions remain about the status of encrypted email and messaging service Riseup.net after several users this week noticed that the service’s warrant canary had apparently expired.

Discussions on both Hacker News and Reddit have led some to believe that the service, which is popular with activists and journalists, has been served with a secret surveillance order, because its warrant canary — issued quarterly — had not been updated before the three-month deadline.

European leaders and Remainers try to keep Britain in the

His intervention coincided with comments by Tony Blair who said Brexit could be reversed by a second referendum if the “pain” of leaving could be increased to change voters’ minds. There was also anger at another former Prime Minister, Sir John Major, who shared a platform with Mr Blair during the referendum. He claimed Brexit was “the tyranny of the majority” and suggested the will of British voters should be ignored. In a further attempt to undermine Brexit, Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny claimed it would be impossible for Britain to leave the EU in just two years.

The Pentagon won’t say why its targeting manual was released online | Popular Science

Last week without fanfare, a 230-page military document (PDF) appeared in the public domain. The document, authored in May 2016, is a comprehensive list of rules, standards, and definitions governing the heart of what the military does: picking targets, and making sure those targets are valid and within the bounds of the laws of war.

The Pentagon isn’t exactly sure how the document ended up online. On Monday, Nov. 15, the nonprofit Federation of American Scientists ran a short post on the newly public document. Entitled “Joint Chiefs Urge “Due Diligence” in Targeting the Enemy,” the post highlights the central theme of the instruction manual: attacking the wrong target in war can have negative consequences for the United States and the countries it works with. This is a simple point, repeated and clarified through page after unredacted page in great detail, setting not just the rules but the very language that America’s military uses when fighting wars and deciding which object or person to fire at.

Wi-Fi Mesh Systems Compared: eero, Orbi, AmpliFi

The future of home Wi-Fi is mesh networking, a new approach to consumer wireless networks that includes smart management and multiple radios designed to handle the load of today’s gadgets. Combine that with the fact that many homes require multiple access points for coverage in different locations and mesh makes the most sense. With 802.11ac we do finally have some range extenders that actually work now. Even when used at a distance, 802.11ac often gives you enough bandwidth to make an extender worthwhile. It’s never perfect, though, unless you’re using Ethernet (or Powerline or MoCA) for the backhaul between your router and extender. Even a workable situation like this takes a true geek to build and manage it. And when things break, it’s not just the geek who’s upset: the whole family has an opinion on the urgency of fixing these issues.

Drone Helps Chase Down Suspects In Early Morning Robbery

Two men were arrested Monday morning after a business burglary – and a short chase – by a drone. An eyewitness saw the break-in happening. That eyewitness was talking to a drone pilot outside The Vault, where the break-in happened, so when the suspects took off, the drone did too.David Bell flies his drone downtown often, mainly just to get beauty shots.”Pretty amazing little thing,” Bell said. Before today, he’s never needed to chase down burglars. He was outside the Vault, upstairs at what’s called the Tom Tom Room, when he and another man saw someone come out of a broken window with two bottles of scotch.

No Evidence of Aloe Vera Found in the Aloe Vera at Wal-Mart, CVS

The aloe vera gel many Americans buy to soothe damaged skin contains no evidence of aloe vera at all.Samples of store-brand aloe gel purchased at national retailers Wal-Mart, Target and CVS showed no indication of the plant in various lab tests. The products all listed aloe barbadensis leaf juice — another name for aloe vera — as either the No. 1 ingredient or No. 2 after water. There’s no watchdog assuring that aloe products are what they say they are. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration doesn’t approve cosmetics before they’re sold and has never levied a fine for selling fake aloe. That means suppliers are on an honor system, even as the total U.S. market for aloe products, including drinks and vitamins, has grown 11 percent in the past year to $146 million, according to Chicago-based market researcher SPINS LLC.
