As technology progresses, lines get blurred between objects and concepts that were previously very distinct. Words can be colloquialized to share the same meaning when they once had their own. Sometimes multiple devices can be melted down into a single box without any sign of their separate technological lineage. Something similar happened to the shell, the console, and the terminal. For many years now, the wireless router has been the backbone of internet connectivity in most homes and many small offices. But many people fail to realize (except for the technically astute among you) that the device is actually made up of several devices that used to be independent of one another and quite well-defined. A typical wireless router, even the cheapest of cheap, contains a wireless access point, ethernet switch, router, stateful firewall, DNS server, DHCP server, QoS engine, and sometimes many more features (such as a DSL/coax modem).
As a result, the technical layperson might refer to this device as “the wireless,” a modem, a router, or simply “the internet box.” All of which fail to encapsulate the whole story, and that’s only one example (and not even what this article is about).Shell, Terminal, and Console — How are they different?Anyone who has tried their hand at an operating system outside the realm of Microsoft and Apple in any serious capacity has undoubtedly come into contact with the command line interface. What do you call it? The shell? The console? The terminal? Does it matter? They all mean the same thing, right? The answer to that is yes and no. Just like the wireless router, these used to be (and technically still are) different parts of the same whole, despite the words sharing their meanings.

Universities are the cradle of free speech, where ideologies and ideas clash, where academics and activists can agree, disagree, or be disagreeable. This is particularly true in the United States, where the First Amendment zealously guards against government surveillance and intrusion into free speech.Yet at hundreds of campuses across the country, administrators encourage students to report one another, or their professors, for speech protected by the First Amendment, or even mere political disagreements.
The so-called “Bias Response Teams” reviewing these (often anonymous) reports typically include police officers, student conduct administrators and public relations staff who scrutinize the speech of activists and academics. This sounds like the stuff of Orwell, although even he might have found the name “Bias Response Team” to be over-the-top.Over the past year, I surveyed more than 230 such reporting systems for the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education and asked dozens of schools for records about their Bias Response Teams. What I found is detailed in a new report describing how universities broadly define “bias” to include virtually any speech, protected or not, that subjectively offends anyone. On many campuses, administrators are called upon to referee whether speech is polite.

MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski just erased any lingering doubts the corporate press serves almost wholly to vomit propaganda in order to control public perception, in a rather stupefying statement during an exchange with Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough about President Trump possibly “trying to undermine the media.”“Exactly. That is exactly what I hear,” Scarborough stated. “What Yamiche said is what I hear from all the Trump supporters that I talk to who were Trump voters and are still Trump supporters. They go, ‘Yeah you guys are going crazy. He’s doing — what are you so surprised about? He is doing exactly what he said he is going to do.’”“Well, I think that the dangerous, you know,” Brzezinski replied, “edges here are that he is trying to undermine the media and trying to make up his own facts. And it could be that while unemployment and the economy worsens, he could have undermined the messaging so much that he can actually control exactly what people think. And that, that is our job.”

Supporters of Germany’s major political parties were asked if electoral laws should be changed to allow non-EU citizens living permanently in Germany to vote.Among supporters of the Social Democrats (SPD), 63.7% supported the proposal, along with 64.8% of Green Party voters. Among centrist parties, there was moderate opposition to the proposal, whereas supporters of the anti-immigration AfD party opposed the idea by a 96.9% margin.Latest polls show that Social Democrats leader Martin Schultz would beat Chancellor Angela Merkel if balloting was based on a direct leadership vote. The German federal election takes place on September 24 this year.

Famine, plague, and war. These have been the three scourges of human history. But today, people in most countries are more likely to die from eating too much rather than too little, more likely to die of old age than a great plague, and more likely to commit suicide than to die in war. With famine, plague, and war in their twilight—at least, for now—mankind will turn its focus to achieving immortality and permanent happiness, according to Yuval Harari’s new book Homo Deus. In other words, to turning ourselves into gods.Harari’s previous work, Sapiens, was a swashbuckling history of the human species. His new book is another mind-altering adventure, blending philosophy, history, psychology, and futurism. We spoke recently about its most audacious predictions. This conversation has been edited for concision and clarity.

After several months of near invisibility—Kate has only made a handful of public appearances since December—the future Queen was everywhere earlier this week.On Sunday night, she was the star of the show at the BAFTAS, Britain’s cut-price answer to the Oscars, resplendent in an unseasonably spring-like Alexander McQueen gown, which she wore with the shoulder straps down and her hair up, despite the chilly winter weather. On Monday, some press photographers were tipped off to shoot some “candid” pictures of Kate, 35, wearing skinny black jeans and a red puffer jacket, with William and Harry at St Mary’s university, where the trio were filming scenes for a documentary about the benefits to mental health of physical exercise, in support of their mental health charity Heads Together. The show will air around the time of the London Marathon which will also benefit the charity.

I mean, what’s the difference between taking six 10-minute breaks to smoke a Marb Red or getting your pole smoked for an hour? Either way, you’ll be ready to tackle the rest of the day.According to the Indy 100, a 42-year-old local council member for Övertorneå in northern Sweden thinks Swedes should be allowed to take a one-hour paid break to “go home and have sex with their partners Per-Erik Muskos is our hero, and he’s using studies that show sex is healthy to back up his proposal.
Muskos thinks that couples aren’t spending enough time together in “today’s busy society,” and he’s hoping his idea of a one-hour sex break can improve people’s relationships.“It’s about having better relationships,” Muskos said. According to the National Sleep Foundation, “one in every four married or cohabiting Americans say they’re so sleep deprived they’re too tired to have sex – and are often kept awake by financial worries.” Another study suggests people are working so much these days that they’re losing interest in coming home for a hump.

Editor’s Comment: Important things are happening on the global stage with regard to the money system. It is a long game, and will take many years to fully play out. But one of those important developments involves the feverish return to gold holdings in both China and Russia, and many individuals in these societies, in India and other burgeoning world powers are also investing in gold. The reason? There is a power play in the works, and there is every possibility that the central banks around the world could drive the fiat currencies into the ground.
The U.S. petrodollar could well lose its global reserve status – indeed, there may be nothing to stop it. As that happens, people around the world are looking to stability, privacy and security in their monetary assets. This is even true in less developed, and little talked about places like Kyrgyzstan, mentioned in this article, were antiquated stores of wealth, like cattle, are still king. But with capricious times ahead, and neighboring Asian powers like China grounding themselves, the government is urging its people to get ready. Are you ready? One Country’s Central Bank Is Urging Its 6 Million Citizens To Buy Goldby Shaun BradleyThe central bank of Kyrgyzstan is encouraging its six million citizens to each own at least 3.5 oz (100 grams) of physical gold. The precious metal is the nation’s leading export but, surprisingly, the people there invest most of their money in cattle.
The country’s location on China’s border seems to be playing a significant role in its choice to shift away from their traditional form of investment. A growing trend across Asia has been an increasing demand for physical metals by private and institutional investors. The Chinese and Russian governments are leading the world in their efforts to stockpile gold, and in turn, they have been fueling speculation about its importance in the future of international finance.
Countries like India have seen internal turmoil as their traditions of owning precious metals confront the government’s new war on cash. The Indian people are the world’s largest buyers of gold, and the measures taken to eliminate cash transactions have only emboldened black markets to meet demand. As authorities crack down on paper money, gold remains one of the last physical and untraceable assets available. The current uncertainty in the banking system has increased demand for more direct control over one’s savings.

Those who don’t like Donald Trump and the current Republican administration are mobilizing in all sorts of ways. They’re speaking up in town halls and calling their representatives. They’re organizing protests and demonstrations. And, for the magically-inclined, they’re casting spells.Starting at midnight on Friday, witches around the country are calling for a mass spell to be cast on Donald Trump every night of a waning crescent moon until he’s driven from office. The spell was publicized by Michael M. Hughes, who told ELLE.com that it was tweaked from multiple spells he saw going around private witchcraft groups. He published it on Extra News Feed because he felt “it would be very welcome to a lot of people.” It quickly spread, with events being formed around the country and support on social media.

Amazon is sticking to its guns in the fight to protect customer data. The tech titan has filed a motion to quash the search warrant for recordings from an Amazon Echo in the trial of James Andrew Bates, accused of murdering friend Victor Collins in Bentonville, Arkansas in November 2015. And it’s arguing as part of that motion that the responses of Alexa, the voice of the artificially intelligent speaker, has First Amendment rights. The case first came to light in December, when it emerged Amazon was contesting a warrant to provide audio from the Echo device covering a 48-hour period from November 21 through 22 2015, alongside subscriber and account information. Amazon handed over the subscriber information and purchase history, but in its 90-page argument against the warrant, filed late last week and published in full below, Amazon said recorded audio should have First Amendment protections and so it wanted the warrant thrown out.

A student activist group at the University of Michigan is demanding campus officials provide them with “a permanent designated space on central campus for Black students and students of color to organize and do social justice work.”The demand is one of several lodged by “Students4Justice,” who this month ratcheted up campus demonstrations to pressure administrators to cave, complaining in a newly launched petition that President Mark Schlissel has snubbed their demands. The clamor for a segregated space for students of color to organize social justice efforts comes even as the public university builds a $10 million center for black students and others in the center of campus. The new center is considered a “multicultural” one open to all students, but is under construction at the behest of a student group called Being Black at the University of Michigan, whose members complained that black students are marginalized because the original multicultural center they use is located on the outskirts of campus.
