Easy Free Piston Stirling Engine

Stirling engines are really cool machines, invented by Reverend Dr. Robert Stirling in 1816 to rival the steam engine, they are one of the most efficient engines ever conceived.  Building one is a very rewarding experience, but it has a certain level of difficulty. However, [Attila Blade]’s version of a free-piston type Stirling engine is simple enough to be built in a matter of minutes. To build the engine you only need a test tube, steel wool, a latex glove, an O ring and some wire. The construction is straightforward as you can see in the video. The whole engine rocks on the wire frame which also makes it different to most other Stirling engines that you can watch on the net. The free piston is just one type of several possible configurations for a Stirling. The most common one, is the beta type, usually made with soda cans, but it is much more difficult to build than [Attila Blade]’s engine.

DARPA’s sub-scale VTOL X-Plane prototype completes flight testing

After several years of development DARPA has successfully completed flight-testing of one of the most novel, and odd-looking, aircraft designs we’ve seen in some time – the sub-scale electric X-Plane.After calling for an innovative new approach to an aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capabilities, DARPA awarded its Phase 2 contract to Aurora Flight Sciences in early 2016. Aurora’s design includes 24 electric ducted fans, 18 on the main wings and six on the smaller front canards. Both the main wings and the canards are designed to tilt upwards for vertical takeoff before rotating to the horizontal for regular flight.

Transgender Texas Boy Gets New Birth Certificate

Born Mary Grace, a nine-year-old North Texas child is now officially named Max. His parents petitioned a court to change all of his legal documents, including his name, birth certificate, and Social Security card to reflect his male name and identity.Max Briggle’s mother Amber told WFAA: “He’s always going to be transgender, but having that piece of paper, my hope is that it’s going to make it a little easier for him.”She called these changes, “another milestone,” and believed the new paperwork was essential for her child while the state legislature debates the proposed “bathroom bill,” SB 6. If passed into law, this legislation would mandate people use bathrooms based on the gender shown on their birth certificates.Amber and husband Adam, who reside outside of Dallas in Denton, became visible advocates for transgender children as the “bathroom bill” debate heated up nationally and in Texas. Max, then MG, became the face of Texas trans kids when his parents invited Attorney General Ken Paxton to dinner at their home. The family wanted to show Paxton they were a “super-average, normal, remarkably unremarkable family,” according to The Dallas Morning News. Paxton and his wife accepted the invitation.

Letter called on J. Edgar Hoover to investigate Groucho Marx over a joke

Evidence of Marx’s Communist ties included friendship with Charlie Chaplin and an anti-American punWritten by JPat BrownEdited by Michael MorisyFor Groucho Marx, sharing a surname with the author of the Communist Manifesto wasn’t winning him any friends in Middle America at the height of the Red Scare, and his pathological inability to hold anything sacred wasn’t helping, either. But according to files released to Michael Best, where he finally crossed the line for one couple – leading to them calling on the FBI to investigate him immediately – was when he used the country’s name in vain.If the Bureau had followed through on this tip, this would mean Marx would have beaten fellow comedian George Carlin to being investigated over a pun by a good nine years. But the FBI’s response, written by J. Edgar Hoover’s secretary was, shall we say, diplomatically noncommittal.

How To Hack Your Own Password | Hackaday

[Haseeb] failed the marshmallow test as a kid. He has no self-control. He wastes a lot of time on reddit. There is a solution to this problem — simply lock yourself out of your account. The process is simple, and all you need to do is change your password to something random, change the recovery email address, and click submit. In the blink of an eye, all your imaginary Internet points vanish. That’s the one guaranteed way to quit reddit. However, [Haseeb] wanted to hold onto those magic Internet points in the event they become worth something. This led to a far more baroque solution. He found a service that would email him at a later date, send an email to himself containing a random password, and quit reddit temporarily. Until that email was delivered, he was officially off reddit. When that email was received, productivity would stop.A few years pass, and [Haseeb] had some time to kill at his new job. He decided to scrounge up his old password, only to discover he locked himself out of his Reddit account until 2018. What followed is a security exploit of an ’email me in the future’ service, and a great example of how much effort one person will commit to a lifetime of instant gratification.

The Woman in Black: The strange story of a crossdressing ghost

Part the First, being the tale of a haunting in rural England in the 1920s.Almost a hundred years ago now, out on the fields and winding lanes by Curry Rivel in Somerset, there came stories of the ghostly apparition of a woman who walked at night. A woman dressed in black, her face sinisterly veiled. It was said that anyone who ever looked upon this specter’s face, looked into her blackened soulless eyes, would be struck dead on the very spot where they stood.Who was this ghost? Some said she was the spirit of an old governess who had lost her charges in some terrible accident—most likely drowned by the old weir—who now roamed the misty meadows and hedgerows looking for their bodies to bring them home once more. Others said she was an evil wraith looking to snare the unwary soul. When children wouldn’t go to sleep at night, their mothers told them to close their eyes or the woman in black would find them out and feast upon their bones.

Brain-Infecting Worm Booming in Popular Vacation Destination

NEWSER) – A parasitic worm that infects people’s brains is turning up more frequently on Maui, and Hawaiian officials are getting worried. “It’s like having a slow-moving bullet go through your brain,” says state epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Park, per the AP, explaining the effects of rat lungworm disease. According to ABC News, the worm lives in the lungs of rats, but its larvae are expelled in the rats’ feces and infect slugs and snails, which in turn pass the larvae on to humans. The larvae can survive for months in humans, growing into worms an inch long. The parasite can cause a rare form of meningitis, which comes along with serious headaches, vomiting, temporary facial paralysis, and more. There’s no treatment for the disease, and it can cause permanent brain damage, though it is rarely fatal.

WikiLeaks just dropped the CIA’s secret how-to for infecting Windows

WikiLeaks has published what it says is another batch of secret hacking manuals belonging to the US Central Intelligence Agency as part of its Vault7 series of leaks. The site is billing Vault7 as the largest publication of intelligence documents ever.Friday’s installment includes 27 documents related to “Grasshopper,” the codename for a set of software tools used to build customized malware for Windows-based computers. The Grasshopper framework provides building blocks that can be combined in unique ways to suit the requirements of a given surveillance or intelligence operation. The documents are likely to be of interest to potential CIA targets looking for signatures and other signs indicating their Windows systems were hacked. The leak will also prove useful to competing malware developers who want to learn new techniques and best practices.”Grasshopper is a software tool used to build custom installers for target computers running Microsoft Windows operating system,” one user guide explained. “An operator uses the Grasshopper builder to construct a custom installation executable.” The guide continued:

Pedophilia At The Highest Levels Of Power: Sidestepping Distraction, Focusing On The True Problem

Much has changed in recent years, whereas topics that once might have been wholly disregarded and deemed crazy, are now being openly discussed by the same outlets that once openly called them fake, or illegitimate. And now with no sense of irony, and not even a hint of humility or recognition that they might have been wrong or mislead the American people, they push their pseudo-intellectual perspective as if we should just ignore this glaring hypocrisy and clear institutional failure. We see this in so many different subjects today that most no longer know what to believe, or who to trust, which is one of the most important aspects of the ongoing agenda, calling everything in to question, so nothing is for certain.
