FBI investigated a group of Dungeons and Dragons players as part of the Unabomber case

Bureau noted that the loosely-knit group of gamers were “armed and dangerous,” as well as “overweight and not neat in appearance.”Written by JPat BrownEdited by Beryl LiptonFBI files released to CJ Ciaramella reveal that the Bureau investigated a group of Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) players as potential leads in the Unabomber case. A 1995 memo from the San Francisco office notes that the loosely-knit group of gamers were “armed and dangerous.”As background, the memo goes on to summarize an earlier interview with an employee of DnD’s former publisher TSR, which gave an extremely abbreviated introduction to role-playing and war gaming…an even briefer description of DnD’s history…

Physicists make waves by simulating black hole in a bathtub

Black holes are perhaps the most mysterious cosmic bodies in the universe. They’re elusive and packed with secrets. The physics that explains black holes isn’t any less esoteric either, such that only a few, if anyone, are aware of their inner workings. But sometimes, complex physics can be demonstrated with deceivingly simple, elegant experiments. Galileo Galilei proved in the 16th-century that all objects, no matter their size or weight, fall at the same speed by dropping balls weighing different amounts from the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. Thomas Young proved light is a wave in 1803 by flashing light through two narrow slits on a board. And in 2017, at the University of Nottingham, UK, physicists proved the existence of a physical process around black holes using a specially designed bathtub.Bathtub physicsBlack holes are the most massive, most mysterious objects in the universe. A black hole does not have a surface, like a planet or star. Instead, it is a region of space where matter has collapsed in on itself. The gravitational pull of this region is so great that nothing can escape – not even light — which makes the black hole virtually invisible. But we definitely know these exist. We might even get the chance to image one — a black hole’s event horizon that is — after physicists made a radio observatory equivalent to the size of planet Earth for this purpose.

The bizarre story of the ‘Seven Sutherland Sisters’ girl group & their 37-feet of hair

The Sutherland Sisters were all born sometime between 1845 and 1865 in a poor, rural farming community in Cambria, New York. The Sutherland family owned a turkey farm which the girls all worked on, though their barefoot farming days would be short-lived. After their mother passed away in 1867, their father, Fletcher Sutherland—a notoriously lazy and unmotivated man who had inherited the farm from his multi-talented father—would spend the rest of his life trying to get rich by pimping his daughters out in various ways including as a musical act. A huge part of the girl’s appeal was the fact that between the seven of them, they possessed 37-feet of hair—an incomprehensible number when, if you do the math quickly in your head, would translate to each sister having at least five feet of hair on her head. Their musical performances would always conclude with their father commanding them to “Let down your hair!’ which they did to the delight of their legions of fans. While I’m on the topic of the girls’ somewhat disturbing amount of hair, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention their dear mother’s homemade hair tonic which apparently helped her daughters grow hair like weeds. While she was still alive, Mrs. Sutherland would apply her unique “hair growth” tonic (which was made up of bay rum, witch hazel, salt, magnesia and hydrochloric acid), to her daughters’ luxurious hair. Apparently, the crazy concoction Mrs. Sutherland Frankensteined together in her kitchen smelled horrific, and this led to the girls being treated as social outcasts at school. There may have been a sense of collective relief between the sisters after their mother passed as it meant that the mysterious hair tonic, went to the grave along with her.

They Were ‘Grilled Alive’: US Government Exposed Running Nazi-Like Torture Program in Yemen

An unprecedented report from the corporate press claims U.S. forces have participated in extreme torture and abuse of detainees accused of affiliation with Al Qaeda in Yemen — including “the ‘grill,’ in which the victim is tied to a spit like a roast and spun in a circle of fire,” the Associated Press finds.A network of secretive prisons in southern Yemen provide the backdrop for the alleged barbaric acts allegedly carried out by forces from the U.S. and United Arab Emirates — many of those detention facilities remain hidden in plain sight. That some of the covert prisons sit inside military bases might not be much of a shock, but others are located in ports, an airport, private villas, and even a nightclub — and all, according to the AP, remain untouchable by the embattled Yemeni government.Whistleblower Edward Snowden weighed in on the new revelations, tweeting,American officials unsurprisingly balked at the accusation troops have participated in the astonishingly heinous behavior described in the AP’s report.Reports the AP:“Senior American defense officials acknowledged Wednesday that U.S. forces have been involved in interrogations of detainees in Yemen but denied any participation in or knowledge of human rights abuses. Interrogating detainees who have been abused could violate international law, which prohibits complicity in torture.“The AP documented at least 18 clandestine lockups across southern Yemen run by the United Arab Emirates or by Yemeni forces created and trained by the Gulf nation, drawing on accounts from former detainees, families of prisoners, civil rights lawyers and Yemeni military officials. All are either hidden or off limits to Yemen’s government, which has been getting Emirati help in its civil war with rebels over the last two years.”Notably, this is the first ‘official’ acknowledgment the United States participates in interrogations inside the borders of Yemen.Forces transported some detainees to an Emirati base in Eritrea, according to Yemen Interior Minister Hussein Arab.Unnamed and unverifiable U.S. defense officials told the Associated Press ‘senior U.S. military leaders’ have been aware of alleged torture taking place in Yemen for some time — but have investigated the charges, and apparently found nothing amiss, as U.S. troops, they claim, were never present during detainee torture.Perhaps beyond tellingly, neither the AP nor the anonymous officials elucidated on whether the lack of U.S. troop presence during the alleged grilling alive of detainees meant senior military leaders indeed discovered forces from other nations roasting people alive and said nothing, or that the torture allegations were completely baseless. Those defense officials further“told AP that American forces do participate in interrogations of detainees at locations in Yemen, provide questions for others to ask, and receive transcripts of interrogations from Emirati allies.”Torture this horrific, if proven true, harkens immediately back to Bush-era implementation of barbaric human rights violations by the CIA — which included waterboarding and other acts the agency, itself, knew to be utterly inefficacious — which temporarily halted adherence to the law and all semblance of ethics under the premise of extracting information from detainees following the attacks of 9/11.“We always adhere to the highest standards of personal and professional conduct,” chief Defense Department spokeswoman, Dana White, told the AP on perusal of its report. “We would not turn a blind eye, because we are obligated to report any violations of human rights.”In a statement, the UAE government also balked, insisting,“There are no secret detention centers and no torture of prisoners is done during interrogations.”“The UAE was one of the countries involved in the CIA’s torture and rendition program,” reminds New York University Professor of Law Ryan Goodman. “These reports are hauntingly familiar and potentially devastating in their legal and policy implications.”To repeat, the U.S. Department of Defense must report violations of human rights — yet the vagueness of the claim senior military brass investigated allegations of excruciating torture, but would only offer that U.S. troops had not been present. Without further explanation, that detail could indicate a troubling sin of omission — in short, a failure to report violations of human rights.Source: Middle East PressNot one of the dozens interviewed by the AP accused U.S. troops of witnessing torture, but the malicious, degrading, deplorable, torturous abuses described by former inmates of the secret prisons would seem impossible to have taken place without their cognizance.AP continues:“At one main detention complex at Riyan airport in the southern city of Mukalla, former inmates described being crammed into shipping containers smeared with feces and blindfolded for weeks on end. They said they were beaten, trussed up on the ‘grill,’ and sexually assaulted. According to a member of

LGBTQ petition demands permanent ‘rainbow crosswalks’ in cities across the country

LGBTQ activists in cities across the country are calling for city officials to create “rainbow crosswalks” to “honor the LGBTQ community.”“Rainbow crosswalks” are public crosswalks that have been repainted in rainbow colors, which have been adopted by the LGBTQ community as a symbol of greater acceptance and rights for LGBTQ causes and beliefs.Activists are urging local lawmakers to create the crosswalks through the use of petitions. Currently, one of the cities targeted is Chicago. A petition is now circulating there that has garnered more than 4,000 signatures. According to the petition’s text, “Some cities, like San Francisco, have made LGBTQ people feel more at home by creating permanent rainbow crosswalks to honor the LGBTQ community. … This is one small thing that could be done to signal to one of the most marginalized communities in the country that we are here for them, we see them, and we support them.”Washington, D.C., already installed temporary rainbow crosswalks honoring transgender persons earlier this year, and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed announced this week the city will make its rainbow crosswalks permanent following the circulation of a petition that amassed more than 22,000 signatures. Reed said the crosswalks would be featured year-round in part to honor those who lost their lives in the 2016 Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando.

Intelligence agency takes on intelligence agency in the “Astral Projection Caper”

A formerly TOP SECRET document from the NSA describes an incident which it called the “Astral Projection Caper,” which revolved around what seems to have been fabricated, or at least nonexistent, CIA evidence of confirmed psychic phenomenon.Though the first chapter of the history is missing, another memo (seemingly from CIA) provides some insight. That memo, dated July 3, 1974, proposed an experiment where Patrick Price would be asked to use “remote viewing” to psychically gain information about a Soviet installation in the Ural Mountains. CIA already had some detailed information on the area, and so saw the opportunity to test Price’s abilities in a semi-operational setting. The experiment was to proceed in three stages: Describing the distinctive exterior features, providing floor plans and descriptions of the interior, and describing operations within the facility.

What environmentalists just blamed on white people is downright stunning – Allen B. West

If 2017 has proven anything, it’s that liberals still haven’t figured out why nobody takes them seriously. Despite getting clobbered in the 2016 election, liberals have doubled down on the same old tactics. Instead of finding better ways to get their message across, the left is still calling everyone that disagrees with them racist.Liberals play the race card so often, even issues that have nothing to do with race are swept up in the rhetoric. Climate change, for instance, shouldn’t have anything to do with race. After all, if the planet really is on the way to total destruction, we’re all going down with it. The Apocalypse simply won’t care about your skin color. However, the left doesn’t see things that way. In fact, the reason they think climate change isn’t being taken seriously is because of white people.

Some environmentalists think their movement needs to deal with its “unsustainable whiteness” problem, according to a blog post shared by the Sierra Club.

Grist blogger Nikhil Swaminathan claimed the environmental movement has “mostly run by well-off white people concerned about conserving critters and our country’s natural beauty, not the health and welfare,” in a post Tuesday. The Sierra Club’s official Twitter account later shared the blog with followers Wednesday afternoon.

What’s the key to saving the planet? Getting white people out of the way:

“Simply put, NGOs [non-government organizations] and foundations in the green space are still overwhelmingly white at all levels, especially top leadership — and that’s limiting their effectiveness, especially in addressing issues that affect frontline communities,” Swaminathan wrote. “Still, nearly three-quarters of staffers are white. And the numbers indicate less inclusiveness as you move to higher rungs in those outfits: Only 15 percent of the leaders are people of color.”

“White privilege and racism within the broader environmental movement is existent and pervasive,” Aaron Mair, the Sierra Club’s first black president, told Grist. “The current is not maintainable — we’re becoming a brown nation. It’s not about a one-off. It’s about sustainability.”

Can you imagine the outrage if someone said this about minorities? To liberals, the problem isn’t the message, the problem is that it’s white people delivering it. If we could just replace the white people, everything would be perfect!

In truth, it is exactly this kind of reasoning that has caused people to abandon the left. If you can’t convince someone on the merits of your argument…find a better argument. It’s really that simple.

Of course, leftists don’t seem to understand this logic. When people aren’t convinced of their argument, they just go straight into blaming white people. Not only will that not win anyone over, it shows who the real racists are in this country.

Fake Your ID Photos – the 3D Way

Photographs for identification purposes have strict requirements. Lighting, expression, and framing are all controlled to enable authorities to quickly and effectively use them to identify individuals reliably. But what if you created an entirely fake photograph from scratch? That’s exactly what [Raphael Fabre] set out to do.With today’s 3D modelling tools, human faces can be created in extreme detail. Using these, [Raphael] set out to create a 3D model of himself, which was then used to render images simulating a passport photograph. Not content to end the project there, [Raphael] put his digital doppelgänger to the test – applying for a French identification card. He succeeded.

Pelosi: I Am a ‘Target’ Because I Am a ‘Master Legislator,’ ‘Politically Astute Leader’

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

I’m just gonna leave this here…

NancyP Screen shot/Family Guy

Pelosi said, “We believe there’s a real opportunity. Now, it’s not a slam dunk. History is on our side, but it takes strategic, unified and disciplined — to have harmony. It doesn’t mean we have anonymity, but we have unity when it comes to that fight. Should I sing my praises? Well, I am a master legislator. I am a strategic politically astute leader. My leadership is recognized by many around the country, and that is why I am able to attract the support that I do which is essential to our election, sad to say.

“I am very pleased that the cooperation that we’re doing working with all the social media and small donor community to change how we communicate but also how we attract resources, intellectual and financial to the party,” she continued. “I have experience in winning the…

Nominal Lumber Sizes Land Home Depot And Menards In Hot Water

Hard times indeed must have fallen upon the lawyers of the American mid-west, for news reaches us of a possible class-action lawsuit filed in Chicago that stretches the bounds of what people in more gainful employment might consider actionable. It seems our legal eagles have a concern over the insufficient dimensions of their wood, and this in turn has caused them to apply for a class action against Home Depot and Menards with respect to their use of so-called nominal sizing in the sale of lumber. If you have ever bought commercial lumber you will no doubt understand where this is going. The sawmill takes a piece of green wood straight from the forest, and cuts it to a particular size. It is then seasoned, either left to dry out and mature in the open air or placed in a kiln to achieve the same effect at a more rapid pace. This renders it into the workable lumber you expect to use, but causes a shrinkage of the wood that since it depends on variables such as moisture can not be accurately quantified. Thus a piece of wood cut by the sawmill at 4 inches square could produce a piece of seasoned lumber somewhere near 3.5 inches square. It would thus be sold as having only a nominal size of 4 inches This has been the case as long as commercial lumber has been produced, we’d guess for something in the region of a couple of centuries, and is thus unlikely to be a surprise to anyone in the market for lumber.

Florida Cops Shut Down Secret Spy Plane Plan After Backlash By Locals

The Miami-Dade Police Department has decided to drop its wide-area surveillance plan in the face of public backlash. The MDPD tried to slip it past residents and the county government by claiming the acquisition of a secret spy plane was too important to be done properly.Documents submitted by the commission, first reported by New Times last Thursday, showed that MDPD has already applied for a $500,000 Department of Justice grant to begin testing the program. The department claimed the deadline to apply for the grants had allegedly been too pressing to wait to notify the public, and so County Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s office applied for the DOJ money without first getting public approval.A classic case of asking forgiveness rather than permission, coupled with a deliberate attempt to circumvent the part of the process that would have caused the most problems for the MDPD’s surveillance plans: the public’s comments.Once the document was posted publicly, the backlash began, led by a number of rights groups including the ACLU and the Defending Rights and Dissent Foundation. The surveillance system sought is repurposed Iraq War tech: a high-powered camera system mounted on an airplane that proponents and opponents both describe as a “DVR for real life.” Capable of capturing a 32-square-mile area, the cameras don’t provide much in terms of close-up detail, but do allow law enforcement agencies to track people’s movements over a several hour period, whether in real-time or by replaying recordings. As the Miami New Times reports, the MDPD has offered no justification for this expansion of its surveillance powers. Apparently, the new surveillance tech was supposed to sell itself, what with most of the cost being offset by a $500,000 DOJ grant. Just as disturbing is the fact that so few county lawmakers questioned the acquisition, even after being made aware the MDPD had already applied for the grant without running it by them first.Fortunately, the plan is now dead. The MDPD may still want its eye in the sky, but its top official has decided he won’t go against the public’s will… for now.

A 9-year-old football player gets a college scholarship offer? Yep, you bet

In case you missed it, there’s been a trend of some college programs offering scholarships to kids at much younger ages than normal. Usually this happens in the later stages of high school. Not anymore.New Florida Atlantic coach Lane Kiffin recently offered rising eighth grader Kaden Martin, son of former Tennessee QB Tee Martin, now offensive coordinator at Southern California. Martin’s son graduates in 2022.Kiffin also offered a California quarterback who just finished sixth grade, per Fox Sports reporter Bruce Feldman.Kiffin got a commitment from 15-year-old Florida quarterback Brandon McDuffey, who graduates in 2020 and hasn’t thrown a varsity pass yet. He just finished ninth grade. McDuffey told USA Today that “I just felt (Florida Atlantic) was the best place for me to commit to as of right now. I visited the school, and I like the facilities and the campus a lot. Coach Kiffin, coming from Alabama and winning championships as the offensive coordinator, I feel like he’s a great coach.”Now, the race to offer has gotten even earlier.A 9-year-old in Los Angeles, Havon Finney Jr., recently received an offer from the University of Nevada. The news was reported by his trainer, Mike Evans, a former Louisville football player.
