The world’s first 3D-printed camper

Saskatoon-based Wave of the Future 3D, with assistance from Create Café 3D Printing Solutions Inc and Saskatchewan Polytechnic, has produced the world’s first 3D-printed full-sized camper. For more information see the IDTechEx report on 3D printing.   Named The Wave, the camper designed by Wave of the Future 3D, was printed in one piece and took around 230 hours to 3D print. The camper, which has a 100-year life expectancy, weighs 600 lbs and stands 6′ wide and 13′ long, and can be taken off of its base and put on stilts for a more permanent position; it also has three covered holes in the floor so it can be used as an ice-fishing hut in the cold Canadian winters. The camper was printed at Create Cafe.   “We believe any problem can be solved through 3D-printing,” says Dustin Maki, CEO and founder of Create Café. “We are excited to 3D-print the world’s first camper. This project wouldn’t be possible without our relationship with Sask Polytech. Through an applied research grant we collaborated on the development of custom, high-flow nozzles that push the boundaries of 3D-printing.”

Big brands ripping off street art is not cool: why illegal graffiti should be protected by copyright

When street artist Jason “Revok” Williams sprayed his trademark chevrons on a handball court in Brooklyn, he probably didn’t imagine he would end up taking a high-street fashion giant to court for breach of copyright. But in January 2018, that’s what happened – and Swedish retailer H&M retaliated with its own lawsuit, rejecting Williams’ claims and dubbing his work “vandalism”. Then came a series of intriguing twists. On March 15, H&M issued a tweet about “withdrawing the suit”, following a backlash against the retailer. Williams’ lawyer then confirmed that, despite earlier statements, H&M was not dropping the lawsuit. The ongoing furore raises an interesting issue: can illegal graffiti be protected by copyright and can the artists stop big brands misappropriating it in this way?The case started when Williams’ lawyer issued a cease-and-desist letter asking H&M to remove an advertising campaign for its New Routine sportswear line which used imagery and videos that incorporated one of his artworks. The campaign featured a model on a handball court posing in front of the Revok artwork. Williams maintained this was a case of copyright infringement, unfair competition and negligence – and that the association with the H&M brand was causing him reputational damage.

How to Stop Amazon and Google Ads from Stalking You Around the Web

How to Stop Amazon and Google Ads from Stalking You Around the WebByJack BuschLast Updated on March 16, 2018Ever notice how products you were considering buying follow you around the web? Here’s how to put a stop to it. COMMENTSI have a problem—it’s called gear acquisition syndrome, and if you’re a musician, photographer, or DIYer, then you know what I’m talking about. I’m constantly fighting the urge to buy some hobby-related gizmo or gadget that feels essential at the time but I could definitely live without, be it a $50 power tool or a $100 bread knife. But you know what makes it really hard? Personalized Ads.You know how you might spend your entire lunch break idly reading reviews for a photography backdrop or a pedal that makes your guitar sound like an animated Japanese pop star? And then out of sheer will-power, you tell yourself, “No!” and close the browser, thus winning the battle against unnecessary expenditures on random gear. All is well. Until there you are, browsing a completely unrelated website and in the corner, you see an ad for that precise thing you had just talked yourself out of buying. It’ll follow you from site to site, preying on your weakness: “Hey buddy, still thinking about buying that Kreg Jig? It’s only $99. It’ll practically pay for itself with all the projects you’ll do.”

Philadelphia Zoo gorilla prefers to walk around like a human

The Philadelphia Zoo has a clean freak on its hands – well, not on its hands, actually.Louis, 18, a male gorilla who has been at the zoo since July 2004, is keeping his hands clean by choosing to walk around on two legs, according to an Associated Press report:When Louis has his hands full of tomatoes or other snacks, he walks upright like a human to keep food and hands clean, rather than the typical gorilla stance of leaning forward on his knuckles.

The CIA Democrats. Former Intelligence Operatives Seek Nomination as Democrats in U.S. Midterms

An extraordinary number of former intelligence and military operatives from the CIA, Pentagon, National Security Council and State Department are seeking nomination as Democratic candidates for Congress in the 2018 midterm elections. The potential influx of military-intelligence personnel into the legislature has no precedent in US political history. If the Democrats capture a majority in the House of Representatives on November 6, as widely predicted, candidates drawn from the military-intelligence apparatus will comprise as many as half of the new Democratic members of Congress. They will hold the balance of power in the lower chamber of Congress. Both push and pull are at work here. Democratic Party leaders are actively recruiting candidates with a military or intelligence background for competitive seats where there is the best chance of ousting an incumbent Republican or filling a vacancy, frequently clearing the field for a favored “star” recruit.A case in point is Elissa Slotkin, a former CIA operative with three tours in Iraq, who worked as Iraq director for the National Security Council in the Obama White House and as a top aide to John Negroponte, the first director of national intelligence. After her deep involvement in US war crimes in Iraq, Slotkin moved to the Pentagon, where, as a principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs, her areas of responsibility included drone warfare, “homeland defense” and cyber warfare. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has designated Slotkin as one of its top candidates, part of the so-called “Red to Blue” program targeting the most vulnerable Republican-held seats—in this case, the Eighth Congressional District of Michigan, which includes Lansing and Brighton. The House seat for the district is now held by two-term Republican Representative Mike Bishop.
