Parents Demanding School District Give Recess To Kids

The Osceola County School Board meeting was packed Tuesday evening as parents demanded schools allow recess.

“They need it. They need it to get their communication skills to problem solve and to get the energy out,” Kim Noble told CBS affiliate WKMG-TV.

Superintendent Melba Luciano told the parents the school district needs to break down the day by minutes to see where recess can be added.

Amanda Lipham told WKMG her young son came home crying from school because he wasn’t allowed to play outside.

“I could see in his eyes that he lost that enthusiasm for school. He needed that time to socialize, that time to make friends,” she said. “I asked him if he made any friends and he said, ‘No, I don’t have time. I don’t have time to talk to them.’”

The school board wants to come up with a plan with the affected parents in hopes to allow recess at county schools.

Pentagon’s Paid Patriotism Program

Military tributes are a staple of professional sporting events, from surprise homecomings of veterans, to color guards, to enlisted men and women throwing out ceremonial first pitches. But according to an oversight report released Wednesday by Sens. Jeff Flake and John McCain of Arizona, many of these seemingly genuine displays of patriotism have actually been marketing stunts paid for by the Department of Defense with taxpayer money.

According to the latest report, a follow-up to one McCain released in May, military services have dished out $53 million in sports-related marketing and advertising contracts since 2012. Of that, more than $9 million went directly to teams in the five biggest American professional sports leagues (the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, and MLS). Although Flake and McCain determined that some contracts constituted legitimate marketing and advertising, such as stadium signs and recruiting booth space at games, 72 of the 122 contracts they uncovered involved inappropriately funded “patriotic tributes.”

scientists think octopuses ‘might be aliens’ after DNA study

Not to send you into a meltdown or anything but octopuses are basically ‘aliens’ – according to scientists.

Don

Researchers have found a new map of the octopus genetic code that is so strange that it could be actually be an “alien”.

The first whole cephalopod genome sequence shows a striking level of complexity with 33,000 protein-coding genes identified – more than in a human.

Not only that, the octopus DNA is highly rearranged – like cards shuffled and reshuffled in a pack – containing numerous so-called “jumping genes” that can leap around the genome.

“The octopus appears to be utterly different from all other animals, even other molluscs, with its eight prehensile arms, its large brain and its clever problem-solving abilities,” said US researcher Dr Clifton Ragsdale, from the University of Chicago.

Where U.S. Mail Went to Die

The “dead” mail arrived constantly, black bags filled with almost 30,000 letters and parcels each day. These high casualties caused only a general sense of alarm among late 19th and early 20th century Americans. Postal clerks in Washington, D.C. sorted through all letters pronounced dead, separating the truly lifeless from the merely ill. Clerks worked to decipher illegible addresses, complete vague or partial addresses, and identify the sender of a letter with insufficient postage so that the item could be returned and posted properly.

When a letter or parcel really and truly died, clerks recycled the paper, sorted the packages contents, and displayed some of the strangest and most notorious items in a small museum. As early as the 1850s, visiting the Dead Letter Office and its makeshift museum was a wildly popular activity for tourists to Washington, D.C. Travel guides and popular writers encouraged visitors to witness the scale of the United States government by visiting the Pension Office, Patent Office, and Post Office Department.

Fast Broadband To Be Classed a Fundamental Right in the UK

All UK homes and businesses will have access to “fast broadband” by 2020, David Cameron has pledged.

The PM is to introduce a “universal service obligation” for broadband, giving the public a legal right to request an “affordable” connection.

It would put broadband on a similar footing to other basic services such as water and electricity.

Labour said it meant “another five years on the broadband back-burner” for those struggling with their service.

In 2010, the coalition government promised the UK would have the best superfast broadband in Europe by 2015.

Then, in 2012, a pledge was made by then-Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt that the UK would have “the fastest broadband of any major European country” by 2015.

He defined high-speed broadband as offering a download speed of greater than 24 megabits per second (Mbps). Communications regulator Ofcom defines it as 30Mbps.

‘Fundamental right’

Mr Cameron’s latest announcement is aimed at ensuring consumers have access to a broadband connection with a speed of at least 10Mbps, no matter where in the country they live or work.

“Access to the internet shouldn’t be a luxury, it should be a right – absolutely fundamental to life in 21st Century Britain,” he said.

Man arrested for attacking Civil War reenactors with actual bullets

On Friday a group of Civil War reenactors in Checotah, Oklahoma, were reenacting the Battle of Honey Springs, a union victory that occurred in 1863, when they came under real, modern-day gunfire. In the heat of fake battle it must have been kind of exciting though it’s obviously more than problematic.

The source of the fusillade was a drunk, shotgun-wielding man named Gary Alen Lane, who “resides at a residence near the battlefield” according to a post on the McIntosh County Sherrif’s Department Facebook page.

Mr. Lane, who was intoxicated and holding a loaded sawed off shotgun, refused to comply with commands gave to him by Deputies. Mr. Lane eventually began to flee to his residence at which time throwing the firearm. Deputies managed to place Mr. Lane under arrest while he attempted to flee to his residence, but not before a short struggle. Deputies later located additional firearms within his residence.

The shots struck a tent full of actors, hitting one man who will probably henceforth be known as “Old Ironsides” by his drinking buddies due to the fact that the projectile failed to injure him.
